Afiya EAP

Employment Assistance Program

We are dedicated to providing quality, caring, and professional culturally- responsive services to Muslim organisations and businesses

About AfiyaEAP

Afiya EAP is a culturally-responsive Employee Assistance Program and wellbeing service designed for organisations and corporate businesses, especially those with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) staff. We specialise in serving Muslim-based organisations and schools, while also catering to non-Muslim staff within those settings.

Most of our team are Muslim, bilingual and/or multilingual, and come from diverse multicultural backgrounds. Our clinicians are experienced in working with children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples across a wide range of personal and workplace challenges.

With over 20 years of experience through previous clinical settings, we bring expertise in clinical, forensic, school, educational and developmental, disability, community, and workplace mental health. Our team has provided premier psychological, allied health, mental health, counselling, and rehabilitation services to individuals, couples, and families.

We understand the unique barriers faced by Muslim and CALD employees when seeking mental health support. Issues like stigma, cultural misunderstanding, language, or gender preferences often limit access to mainstream services. That’s where Afiya EAP makes a difference.

Our staff are culturally competent, empathetic, and trained to help clients address emotional, physical, spiritual, behavioural, and cultural challenges in a safe and respectful environment.

Afiya’s Clinical Director, Hanan Dover, is a Senior Clinical and Forensic Psychologist and Lecturer in Islamic Psychology at Charles Sturt University.

While we primarily serve Muslim-based organisations, we are inclusive of all staff. What sets us apart is that our team is trained in both mainstream psychological frameworks and culturally- and faith-informed care, providing Muslim employees with a trusted and safe alternative to conventional EAP services.

What can Managers do to Help?

Afiya EAP acknowledges the importance of supporting managers who are navigating the complexities of addressing mental health challenges among their staff. Given the swift emergence of issues in the workplace, we offer dedicated assistance to managers when they require it. Please access our Employers area for detailed information or reach out to us.

Managers and team leaders have the opportunity to engage with Afiya EAP Senior Clinical Professionals either through phone consultations or face-to-face sessions. While the final decision-making authority remains with the manager, these discussions empower them to collaboratively devise strategies and navigate challenging situations effectively, ensuring optimal preparation and outcomes.

Manager Support covers a spectrum of issues, including:

Encouraging employees to utilise the EAP

Conducting constructive conversations with staff facing difficulties

Enhancing mental health first aid skills and workplace communication skills

Handling team issues related to diversity

Addressing emotional and psychological components of employee performance management

Managing challenging employee behaviours

Manager Referral

Managers have the option to formally refer an employee to Afiya EAP for counselling, particularly when certain behaviours are impacting work productivity, such as absenteeism, aggression, difficulty prioritising, or interpersonal challenges.

The manager and employee collaborate to establish counselling goals, which are then addressed in counselling sessions. Examples of goals for a manager referral include developing time management, interpersonal, or communication skills. This transparent process involves the employee
consenting to the manager receiving feedback on progress toward counselling goals.
